Scavenger Photo Hunt January 2018

It's time to share the photos I took for the first Scavenger Photo Hunt of 2018 organised by Kate at 'I live, I love, I craft, I am me' blog.  There are six word prompts this time - Yellow, It starts with an 'O', light, found, colourful and my own choice.

Yellow - Toy Giraffes on wheels at the Peak Wildlife Park, near Leek in Staffordshire.

It starts with an 'O' - Owl - a sculpture in Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

Light - on snow covered fields on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border not far from the town of Buxton.

Found - we have taken out a month's access to Find My Past as we wanted to look at the 1939 Register.  I found my Mum and Dad and my Dad's parents but couldn't find my Mum's parents and sister and Dad's sister.  I eventually found them all but they were very hard to find because whoever had transcribed the original had spelt surnames wrongly.  My grandparents and Mum's younger sister were found at the address I remember visiting as a small child in the 1950s I knew that they should be at that address so waded through pages until I found them. My Dad's sister was found lodging with a family on Granby Road in Leicester where her employment was listed as a nurse.

Colourful - a parrot figure in the houseplant section at Bridgemere Garden World, Cheshire.

My Own Choice - a collage of alternative photos for the above categories.
Found - delicate little pink cyclamen flowers hiding in the undergrowth, the first yellow daffodils of the season, light on silver birch trees, colourful flowers at the garden centre and an old, leafless oak tree.

  2. What a lovely selection. I avoided owls for O, although I'm a perfect nutcase with them & have so enjoyed seing some being posted. Interesting search for your past ancestors & I keep saying I must do some more research as well. Love your alternatives too. Take care.

    1. I dithered between Oak Tree and Owl and finally used the owl. I've been doing family history for about 30 years on and off but hadn't accessed the 1939 records before now as you couldn't see it without a subscription:)

  4. A lovely selection of images Rosie - I love the Owl Sculpture and the snowy scene :) Interesting to read about your family history searches - I did a course with Futurelearn about a year ago on tracing your family tree and one of the many things mentioned was the fact that mistakes were made during transcribing!

    1. Thank you! Both our family surnames seem to attract miss-spellings so you have to interpret things sometimes. I have a family name way back on my father's side which is Hodgetts (they were the ones who lived in a court yard house in Birmingham much like those in the NT's Back to Backs)I eventually found them in 1841 transcribed as Maddgets, when I looked at the original it looked like Hodgetts to my eye but then of course the name was familiar to me:)

    1. Thank you! I saw an advert somehwere that the government is looking for an agency to recruit people to transcribe the 1921 census so work on it will begin soon. It will be interesting to see it:)

  6. A lovely selection Rosie. I must have a look at the 1939 records, I seem to be stuck at the moment. I’m sure you know how it is. Have a lovely weekend. B x

    1. Thank you! Yes, I know that feeling as I'm stuck with most lines in the mid 18th century at the moment, don't think I'll get much further back:)

    1. Thank you! I remember those days of being snowed into the village we lived in and not knowing if the school bus and later the bus to work would get through. It does look pretty if you don't have to go anywhere:)

  9. Great selection Rosie, my favourite is the snowy scene, love the way the field boundaries are marching over the crest of that slope, makes me want to walk up there and peep over the other side :)

  10. Love the giraffes, owl and snowy scene. We were driving around in it recently and I noticed how the snow had accented the landscape in such a way I've never noticed before; so there are benefits to snow! If I had to select one photo it would be the giraffes.

    1. Thank you Fiona, the snow was very pretty and didn't seem very threatening in the clear sunshine, but I bet it got more tricky later in the day:)
